to you, radiant dawn, as you awaken,
we offer beads of dew in sweetest rapture.

who is hausos?

hausos is the proto-indo-european goddess of the dawn. if you want to be really proper and particular about your proto-indo-european, her name is spelt h₂éwsōs.

wait, what is proto-indo-european?

proto-indo-european (PIE for short) is a comparative concept tool for studying different indo-european languages, cultures, and religions. the proto-indo-european civilisation didn't necessarily exist, as no archeological evidence has been found for it, but it is still interesting to try and find the common roots of indo-european things, because there are so many similarities in that family of languages and pantheons. it helps us study how indo-european cultures developed over the time, and where they branched away from each other.

if proto-indo-european was to be confirmed as existing beyond hypotheses, then deities like hausos would be the bases for their indo-european equivalents, but because PIE is only a hypothetical zero point of indo-european culture, hausos is more like if all of her real-world equivalents were boiled down to a common denominator.

deities have equivalents?

yeah, definitely. you might know of how ancient greek and roman gods are always lumped together as the same gods under different names. this isn't how it works, because the two cultures were distinct from each other despite being closely related. even though it is grouped as a family, indo-european has a wealth of differences.

however, since PIE is about seeing which things are the same, hausos has many equivalents from all around the indo-european region. these include the hindu ushas, the greek eos, the roman aurora, the west-germanic ēostre, and the slavic zorya.

so, what attributes does hausos have?

the traits that hausos possesses come from comparing and contrasting all of the goddesses we just listed, and more.

as their "common denominator", hausos is a young woman who is immortal and endlessly being reborn. she is dressed in or associated with the colour red, and has golden shoes/feet. she is often portrayed as a dancer and/or as a charioteer. she shines brightly and widely, and can sometimes be lazy in performing her duties of bringing the sun. she is the daughter of dyēus, the daylight-sky god (the chief god of the PIE pantheon). her arms/hands are open, and she lives in a house in the east, or on an island in the ocean.

does manyface worship hausos?

yes, but not in any ritual fashion. we believe that living your life to the fullest and in accordance to the deity's ideals is an adequate form of worship. to us, hausos represents change and perpetuity - the knowledge that change is the only constant. her concept brings us hope and helps us get back up after we fall, much like the sun always rises after even the darkest of nights. so, by living in a way that is conscious of change, and by always trying our best because we know that no point in our lives is permanent, we are indeed gratefully devoted to her.

jáščer wrote this devotional poem to hausos:

The rising sun suspended in the gestures of a dancer;
The scarlet liberation of a nightingale’s wing -
You die and live again and bring my selfish wish an answer.
You step and I touch faith through the thick darkness of the night,
You smile and I pray to be a bird so I could sing
To honour your arrival in your chariot of light.

I kiss your golden shoes. You are the pattern of my heart,
The rhythm of the ocean and the weaver of my fate.
I trust you, riding westward. Every firmament will part
To hold your colour: red! For blood that stains a hunter’s knife;
For blushing cheeks of maidens; for the beauty you create
The sky is in surrender, and I worship with my life.

You, shining with immortal grace - you, poetry in motion,
Daughter of heaven, you are change and you remain the same.
You shine so wide and warm, your arms are open to devotion,
Refusing to embrace the past - it is already gone!
The waver in eternity, the swell of fervent flame,
Perpetual revival: I depend upon the dawn.

any parting words?

we suppose that making a digital shrine is also a form of worship... but if this is worship, this next part is surely blasphemy: we made her into a fate oc. and we made her a fucked up homunculus! and a narcissistic bisexual. and a system. and we think she's really hot.

any parting words, for real this time?

we hope this page was informative and interesting and introduced you to a cool goddess that inspires us a lot in everything we do. even if we are not consciously thinking of her, the symbol of a sunrise persists as an icon of our lives. if you are going through a dark part of your life, hopefully, learning about hausos will remind you that the dawn is just around the corner. and if you are just chilling, it is still good to remember that it all will pass. be sure to savour every moment.
